Service Overview

The most exposed part of your roof — repaired to last.

Brick chimney stack with a new concrete cap during repairs in Gloucestershire

Your chimney takes the full force of the weather on every side. It's also the single most common source of roof leaks. We repair, rebuild and weatherproof stacks of every kind.

B & S Roof Repairs carries out all types of chimney work across Gloucestershire: repointing eroded mortar joints, rebuilding leaning or spalled stacks, renewing lead flashing, repotting and recapping, fitting cowls, and removing redundant chimneys altogether.

Most chimney leaks come down to failed flashing or perished mortar, both of which let water track straight into the roof and the rooms below. We fix the weatherproofing properly so the leak stops for good.

Whether you want a tired stack made good, a dangerous one rebuilt, or an unused chimney removed and the roof made good above it, we'll assess it safely and quote in writing.

  • Chimney repointing
  • Stack rebuilds (partial & full)
  • Lead flashing renewal
  • Repotting, recapping & cowls

What Happens If You Wait

Why a neglected chimney becomes a serious problem.

A chimney is masonry stuck up in the weather on all four sides. When it goes, it goes quickly — and dangerously.

Persistent damp inside

Failed flashing and open mortar joints funnel water into the stack and down into bedrooms and chimney breasts, bringing staining and damp.

Falling masonry

Frost gets into eroded joints and spalled brick, loosening the stack. Falling masonry is a genuine safety risk to people and property below.

A leaning, unstable stack

Once mortar perishes through the stack, it can start to lean. Left too long, the only fix is a full and costly rebuild.

Why It's Worth Doing Properly

The benefits you'll actually notice — and the ones that pay for themselves.

Stops the leak at source

Most roof leaks start at the chimney — fix the flashing and pointing and the damp inside stops.

Safe and stable

A repointed or rebuilt stack is structurally sound and no longer a falling-masonry risk.

Matched materials

Brick, stone and lead matched to your property so repairs look right, not patched.

Right-sized solution

From a simple repoint to a full rebuild or removal — we recommend only what the stack actually needs.

Tidy and protected

Safe access, protected surroundings and a clean finish, with all waste taken away.

Fully insured work

Working at height on masonry demands proper cover — and we have it.

The Detail

Every type of chimney work, explained.

From the smallest repoint to a complete rebuild, here's what each job involves.

Repointing

We rake out the failed mortar joints and repoint with a mortar mix matched to the original — strong enough to last, soft enough not to damage the brick or stone. Repointing in good time is the cheapest way to extend a stack's life by decades.

Rebuilds

Where brickwork has spalled or the stack is leaning, we take it down to a sound course and rebuild using matching brick or stone, fresh flaunching and new lead. Partial rebuilds save the sound lower section; full rebuilds start from the roofline up.

Flashing and weatherproofing

The lead 'apron' and stepped flashing where the stack meets the roof is the number-one leak point. We renew it in code-appropriate lead, properly dressed and pointed, replacing cracked mortar fillets and tired sealant.

Repotting, capping and removal

We renew cracked pots, fit cowls to stop downdraught and birds, and cap off unused flues to keep them ventilated but dry. Where a chimney is redundant, we can remove it cleanly and make the roof good and watertight above.
