Service Overview

Mechanically fixed ridges and verges that never need re-bedding.

Traditional mortar holds ridge tiles and verges in place — until it doesn't. Frost, movement and age crack it, tiles work loose, and the weather gets in. Dry-fix systems solve that permanently.

B & S Roof Repairs fits Uni dry verge and dry ridge systems across Gloucestershire. Instead of mortar, ridge and hip tiles are mechanically clamped to a batten with a ventilated dry ridge system, and the gable verges are capped with interlocking dry verge units.

Dry-fix isn't just tidier — it's required under current British Standards for new and replacement ridges and verges, because mechanical fixing holds far better in high winds than mortar alone.

It also ventilates the roof at the ridge, helping prevent condensation. Fit it once and you can forget about loose ridge tiles and crumbling verge mortar for good.

What Happens If You Wait

Why mortar-bedded ridges and verges fail.

Mortar is rigid; a roof moves and the weather attacks it constantly. The result is predictable.

Cracking and loose tiles

Thermal movement and frost crack the mortar bed, working ridge and verge tiles loose until they slip or blow off.

Wind and storm damage

Mortar alone struggles in high winds — exactly when you don't want a ridge tile coming down. Mechanical fixing is far more secure.

Repeat repair bills

Re-bedding mortar is a temporary fix that fails again in a few years. Dry-fix is the permanent answer.

Why It's Worth Doing Properly

The benefits you'll actually notice — and the ones that pay for themselves.

Maintenance-free

Mechanically fixed once — no more re-bedding, no more loose tiles, no more crumbling mortar.

High-wind secure

Clamped to a batten, ridge and verge tiles hold firm in the storms the Cotswold edge throws at them.

Standards compliant

Dry-fix meets current British Standards for ridge and verge fixing on new and replacement work.

Better ventilation

Dry ridge systems ventilate the roof apex, helping prevent loft condensation.

Neat, modern finish

Interlocking units give a crisp, uniform line along ridges and gables.

Quick to fit

Most homes are completed in a day or two, with minimal disruption.

The Detail

How dry verge and dry ridge systems work.

Mechanical fixing replaces mortar with engineered components. Here's what's involved.

Dry ridge

We remove the old mortar-bedded ridge tiles, fix a ridge batten along the apex, then clamp each ridge tile down with screws and a ventilated union and seal. The result is a secure, ventilated ridge line that won't crack or come loose — and lets the roof breathe at the top.

Dry verge

At the gable ends, interlocking Uni dry verge caps replace the mortar pointing along the edge tiles. They clip over the tile and screw to the batten, giving a clean, weatherproof edge that holds firm in high winds and never needs re-pointing.

Dry hip systems

Hips are treated like ridges — a hip batten and mechanically fixed hip tiles with a ventilated finish, replacing the mortar bedding that cracks and lets hip tiles slip.

Re-ridging over failed mortar

Where a whole ridge or verge run has failed, converting to dry-fix is far better value than repeatedly re-bedding mortar. We strip the old bedding, make good, and fit the dry system as a permanent upgrade.
